1. Introduction

The University of Rwanda (UR), in collaboration with the Ministry of Health (MoH) and RSOG, invites applications from suitably qualified and experienced general surgeons for six (6) academic positions at the Senior Lecturer level or above.

The successful candidates will be posted to teaching hospitals that partner with the University of Rwanda. They will strengthen the training of medical students, residents, fellows, and other health professionals and contribute to research and curriculum development within the University.

3. Terms of Reference

Under the supervision of the General Surgery Program Director and the Chair of the General Surgery Department, and in collaboration with the management of the teaching hospital of posting, the General Surgeon will perform the following duties.

3.1 Teaching and learning

Teach medical students, residents, fellows, and other health professionals in classrooms, at the bedside, and in operating rooms.
Plan, deliver, and evaluate lectures, tutorials, ward rounds, clinical skills sessions, and supervised surgical procedures.
Set, administer, and grade continuous and final assessments, including clinical and practical examinations.
Mentor and provide academic guidance to learners.

3.2 Clinical practice for teaching

Provide general surgical care at the teaching hospital of posting as part of bedside and operating room teaching, in line with hospital arrangements.
Model safe, ethical, and evidence-based surgical practice for learners.

3.3 Research and grants

Supervise the research of undergraduate students, residents, and fellows.
Conduct research and publish in peer-reviewed journals.
Compete for national and international research grants, either individually or in collaboration with colleagues.

3.4 Curriculum development and review

Contribute to the development, review, and implementation of undergraduate and graduate curricula in surgery and related programs.
Contribute to the quality assurance of teaching and learning.

3.5 Other responsibilities

Participate in departmental, school, and college meetings and committees.
Contribute to community engagement and professional service.
Perform any other related duties assigned by the University.

4. Qualifications and Experience

4.1 Minimum requirements

A medical degree (MBChB, MD or equivalent).
A postgraduate specialist qualification in General Surgery (for example, an MMed in Surgery, a Fellowship of a recognized College of Surgeons, or an equivalent).
Academic rank of Senior Lecturer or above, or qualifications and academic outputs that meet the University of Rwanda requirements for appointment at that rank.
A valid license to practice, issued by the appropriate regulatory council in the applicant's home country.
Demonstrated university teaching experience and a publication record in peer-reviewed journals.

4.2 Desirable attributes

Experience supervising students, residents, or fellow research.
A track record of competitive research grants.
Experience in curriculum development or review.
Experience in resource-limited settings.
Good communication and teamwork skills, along with proficiency in English.

6. Requirements After Selection

Successful candidates will be required to:

Apply to the Higher Education Council (HEC) in Rwanda for equivalence of their degrees; and
Obtain registration with the Rwanda Medical and Dental Council (RMDC) for the License to Practice.
